OXFORD, UK — Iraqi women are suffering a ‘silent emergency’, trapped in a downward spiral of poverty, desperation and personal insecurity despite an overall decrease in violence in the country, according to a survey of 1,700 women in Iraq released today by international aid agency Oxfam.

BAGDAD, 10 mars 2009 (IRIN) – Une nouvelle enquête, publiée à l’occasion de la Journée internationale de la femme, le 8 mars, dresse un sombre tableau de la condition des femmes irakiennes, qui vivent, selon le rapport, en situation « d’urgence silencieuse », endurant l’insécurité, la pauvreté et le manque de services de base.
Intitulée « In Her Own Words: Iraqi women talk about their greatest concerns and challenges » [Avec leurs propres mots : les Irakiennes parlent de leurs principales préoccupations et de leurs plus grandes difficultés], cette enquête a été réalisée en 2008 par l’organisation humanitaire Oxfam International, en collaboration avec l’association de femmes irakiennes al-Amal. Elle a été menée auprès de 1 700 femmes originaires de cinq provinces : Bagdad, Ninevah, Bassora, Kirkuk et Najaf.
